April Spotlight Members of the Month

Why do you CrossFit?

I was really into triathlon for about 10 years, but burned out and was looking for something different and competitive. I tried Crossfit once and loved it. Of course, I enjoy the fitness aspect, but have really come to like the community that Crossfit STL offers.

Why do you choose CrossFit St. Louis?

I Crossfit when I travel and have been to a bunch of other boxes. Crossfit STL has a great community of like-minded people with an excellent facility. Also, the trainers are great and really know my strengths and weaknesses.

What do you want to accomplish in CrossFit?

I’m simply looking to stay fit and live a healthy lifestyle. I like to compete in the open and hope to consistently improve my standing within my age group.

What is your favorite movement and why?

That’s easy, Deadlift. They are good for you and I like to lift lots of weight.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy skiing, fishing and travelling, but since I have 3 kids, work a lot and do Crossfit, I don’t have any free time to do them.

Why do you CrossFit?

I played several sports growing up and have always been athletic and competitive. I’ve been a pretty regular gym goer and without fail would always gravitate toward the group classes. After having my second son, I was looking for something different and a way to get back in shape. I had looked into a CrossFit location closer to our house, but the hours just didn’t work. When my friend Tia mentioned CrossFit St. Louis when we were out on a girls night, I got very excited and told her we should do it! We did on ramp in September 2016 and haven’t looked back. 

For me, CrossFit is the perfect mixture of weightlifting and strength which I enjoy and a different programmed metcon or amrap every day which gets at the aspect of the group classes I loved at previous gyms. And now that my boys see both my husband and I doing it, I’m so proud that we’re teaching them the importance of exercise, taking care of ourselves and pushing ourselves to be better. They love coming to CrossFit with us on weekends!

Why do you choose CrossFit St. Louis?

The sense of community at CrossFit St. Louis is beyond compare. Since day one everyone has been so nice and welcoming. The coaches are stellar and provide great tips on form and technique and really want you to get better just as much as you want that for yourself. And so many times I’ve seen members cheering others on and doing extra moves next to another person to help them finish. It’s inspiring seeing individuals of all levels doing CrossFit and seeing what that next step could be for myself by watching others who have mastered a movement.

What do you want to accomplish in CrossFit?

Mostly I’m in competition with myself. Well… and maybe my husband too. 🙂  I want to continue to improve day over day and year over year, pushing myself to incrementally lift more weight over time and perfect moves I can’t do today without scaling. I am currently working hard on my double unders and would love to be able to get a handstand push up and a strict or kipping pull up within the next calendar year. That’s the thing with CrossFit; there’s no shortage of next steps or challenging goals to continue to push yourself farther than you ever thought you could go.

I’m in the best shape of my life after the last year and a half and it feels so good. I just finished my first 10K in March and am competing in my first Spartan race in April. I would love to continue this trajectory and be the best version of me I can be. 

What is your favorite movement and why?

There are so many fun ones! I love telling people I can do a rope climb. I have also really started to like thrusters – they are such a good full body strength exercise. 

What are your hobbies?

Besides CrossFIt? It’s kind of addicting, you know! Well, I’ve sort of become a runner now and like to do that a couple of times a week to keep up my progress and either work on improving pace or mileage. My anti-CrossFit hobby is baking. I’m the go to gal for birthday treats and any sort of dessert, really. Many years ago I baked my way through an entire book of over 250 recipes. I love the preciseness of it! I also enjoy reading and any fun family activities with my boys.
