to strive consciously or unconsciously for an objective (as position, profit, or a prize) :  be in a state of rivalry

Late Latin competere to seek together, from Latin, to come together, agree, be suitable, from com- + petere to go to, seek 

Comes from Latin competere, “come together,” but in later Latin, it developed the sense “strive together,” which was the basis for the English term

II.  Defining the CrossFit Open in terms of competition:
What is the purpose of the CrossFit Open?
1. to begin the process of finding the fittest competitive exercisers for the CrossFit Games
2. to give ANYONE the opportunity to participate in a CrossFit competition

III.  Why everyone can and should compete:
positive competition – striving for individual improvement
community cohesiveness – our gym populace, local CrossFit community, world wide CrossFit 
cheap competition in the comfort of your own gym/town
new perspective on standards/judging
